If you really want to get fancy, you can splice the lighting wire into your dimmer switxh for the dash and you tach light will dim with your dashlights. I just wired mine into the fuse for the headlights.

RE: Tach install question?
for what it's worth, the green wire goes to the coil terminal nearest the fender, at least that's the right side on my '88. they don't mark the coil + and - like they used to so you have to guess which side is which. and also make sure you get the ground wire attached to a good ground or the tach won't work right either. you can use a 12 volt test light to find the dash light power wire at the dash dimmer switch which is where I spliced in the white wire on my install. this way it only lights up when you turn on the headlights.

I recently purchased a 5in autometer tachometer w/ shift light. I understand the wiring diagram up to the part where it says hook the white wire up to lighting source, and the red wire to the ignition switch, where are these located? i am sure this is a newbie question but I have never installed a tach before and I wan to do it right. Any help would be appreciated

alright dude this is how it works, i installed one of these not long ago on my 5.0.
the red wire should go to a KEY ON/ENGINE OFF circuit. this means it turns on when the key is in the ignition and turned forward but not to turn on the engine. so you locate this circuit by trial and error. the instructions to install one are on my website, go there and read the part where the tach is. as for the green wire, i have a MSD 6AL so it would go to the tach output terminal on it. im not sure what to do with the green wire when somoene does not use the 6AL. but do not wire it to the coil until your sure thats where it has to go, this might damage the unit as ive heard. call up MSD about that part.
the white wire, i just spliced into my AC *****, was easiest to access, those things have little lightbulbs in them so thats the power cord i used for the backlight. pretty simple actually.

Green wire to (-) side of the coil.
Black wire is ground.
Red wire can be spliced into a wire, under the hood, that provides 12 Volts with the key in on and run position. (I have a fox body and all those wires are red as well) Just check them with a volt meter or a test light.
The white wire should be wired into your light switch wiring so you can control all the lighting the same.
It's really easy.
**EDIT** I didn't pay attention to the year of stang you have. I'll have to get back with you on the green wire. I'll bet there is some kind of tach adapter that has to plug in somewhere.
