Then if it is bad, go to the bone yard or ebay and get a new/used cluster

what if i just a an aftermarket temp gauge? how will that work? is it recommended?

you can get a mechanical or a electric gauge. The mechanical one has a mercury probe that runs from the gauge to your engine, the electric one you have to get a sending unit for it and works like the factory one. I would suggest a mechanical one if you go aftermarket, that is what I run.
