Default Timing check

OK, after looking into my distributor, I checked and it was off a tooth or two. I got #1 cylinder up and removed dist. and set it to point at #1 plug. BAMMMM! Running great now!!! But, I have set the timing at 10* with the pill out, plug pill in and I am at 12*, cool right. But my total @ 3800 RPM is 24*. I thought it should be around 36*-40* total. Is there a problem with dist. weights, or is 24* OK. I am going to check different * and see how it runs, but for now 10* seems good. The total is what doesn't seem right.
