Default Opinions & Help on my First 5.0 ENGINE BUILD

This might be boring for some ~ but please take a look at my build, tell me what is the most mismatched part, give any recommendations against my goals (outlined below) and give your best guess as to the power it will produce!! THANKS

I’ve been building a 5.0 engine for a few years as money allows, Recently finished the powertrain from trans to wheels. I’ve had 90% internal engine hard parts for 3 years now (still have not purchased cam*) dropped it all off at Taylor Engine http://www.taylorengine.com/ Last week and wrote check for $500 to get it goin' Jay Steel is truly a badass, & pretty cool as he’s even letting me back in the shop to document the machine work for my little web site...

OK starting with 1986 5.0 H.O. short block as the canvas:

(I have a 1989 short block too, but it can be revived with some rings and bearings, so I choose the 86)

--KB747 Flat Top Forged pistons 4.030" http://kb-silvolite.com/forged.php?a...s&P_id=320
--Head gasket, made sure it matched, so many are 4.100". Multi-Layer Steel, 4.030" Gasket Bore, Compressed 0.040 in.
--Scat 5.4" rods long rods supposed to slightly help reduce pinging etc pat Kelley dcr calculator confirms this
--AFR 165cc 50 state legal heads (have not bought yet)
--Comp cams roller rockers 1.6:1
--cam info in next post.......
--stock 1991 ignition
--complete balance job for 28oz imbalance (keeping the same as my other cars)
--0 deck block
--stock roller lifters
--stock 86 crank, mag, polished, shot peened
--Cobra 1993 replica intake (want to extrude hone, don’t know where to go)
had a friend working for bbk, so got for cost:
--bbk 65mm TB
--BBK equal length shorties
--BBK 2.5" x-pipe w/cats
--C&L intake tube, 73mm MAF 30lb/hr tube
--stock air box
--stock 1991 auto computer
--lentech/broaderperformance AOD wide ratio gears + all the goodies
--TC = M-7902-L 2000-2200 RPM Stall, approx 400-600 RPM higher than stock retains factory lock up feature
--ford racing aluminum drive shaft
--9" rear axle; 28 spline Detroit locker, 3.89:1 gears
-- got flowmaster catback, unknown exactly what # it came with car as its ONLY mod (yes it still had the factory air silencer installed, wow.)
--if I can get the MAC group buy in, will get 3" exhaust catback kit from MAC as experiment test before/after
--thinking of a mild dry nitrous hit, perhaps the 3" will help with this
--190 lph Walbro in tank fuel pump --billet fuel press reg from MM
================================================== ====
GOALS:
==Trying to make 100% street/smog legal. Sadly, the questionable parts are
1)the cam
2)the cobra intake
3)30#injectors
==Make the car run on crap ARCO 87 octane fuel in 104^ so cal commute stop and go traffic
==Decent gas mileage
==fun at the track
==shooting for about 340-400 crank hp +- 15% sim software says max
409hp @ 6000 rpm with comp cam 398ft/lb @ 4500
382hp @ 6000 rpm with crane cam 393ft/lb @ 4000
But just a simulation, in fact I did not input correct intake did not have cfm# instead I choose dual plane intake, so # are only rough estimates at BEST but useful for comparision.

this is the car the engine will be going into http://www.thatmetalbox.com/Fox_Notc...otchbacks.html

Default RE: Opinions & Help on my First 5.0 ENGINE BUILD

I called comp and crane about my combo when I was going to use my modified GT40p heads
http://www.thatmetalbox.com/automotive/GT40P/
the companies recommended the below cams when told my goals, even when I switched to AFR 165 heads.
The compression rato 9.445, the DCR will change between different cams.
As you can see, my quench is near optimal, Ive been told that DCR of 7.5 is low enough to not worry about running 87 octane on a hot day. I am a bit high, but the comp cam has less overlap and lower DCR and more power. however is is not lableed EO 50 state legal. However the machine/sniffer wont be able to tell those two cams apart, right? So I would just say that Ive got the crane, or do they issue a certificate to you? Where can I get a copy of one???

The Comp cam will be more likely to run on 87 octane since the intake valve closes a bit later. Either one should be able to make around 350hp at the crankshaft, maybe more maybe less. If you really wanna make sure it'll run on 87 though, I'd go for the Comp one just for the lower dcr. You could also look at some of their extreme energy cams too.

cool. yes I was 1st looking at the XE258 but it looked like it would make a higher DCR than the crane...
I read a history of smog controls for cars and if I remember it correctly it stated that the first smog controls were supposed to lower NOX which were produced by high cylinder pressures. I think that the max cylinder pressure for the XE was higher, maybe a better choice if not smogging for sure. This is why I finally decided against the 58cc AFR heads and am thinking 61cc offering. The cams I am familliar with most are comp and crane. I would be more than willing to look at other companies... Thanks
