Swaping Ingition Switch

Swaping Ingition Switch
Whats up guys, well my inginition switch (key on column) is getting pretty old and worn out. In fact it keeps wanting to shut off. I can feel the play in it, its just old and loose.....lol. Its like after I turn to start position and its running if you BEARLY touch it it shuts the car off. Frustrating to say the least. I've been reading a little about swapping them out, didn't know if any one had any tips or suggestions on doing this. Never done an ingition switch. Can I just pull the switch out of an old column with the key, or can I order a new one>?? Tips please, thanks guys!
Do I need to swap the whole column or can I just replace the switch.

RE: Swaping Ingition Switch
you can definately change just the switch, and as far as using one out of another car, unless you happen to have a parts car or access to one for free, a new one from Autozone or something isn't very expensive at all.

I can feel it. When I turn it to runit sags back, when I'm holding it in the run, I can hear the fuel pump turn on when I let go it shuts off. I gotta pull it off regaurdless, so I'll throw a meter on it adn make sure its getting power. Sound about right. Thanks for the info I didn't know local auto would have, you just saved me a hassle!

No, it doesn't sound right. The key switch is strickty mechanical, ONLY. It connects to a rod that travels down the column to the electrical part of the ignition switch mounted further down on the top of the column. It looks like this

If you need to replace it
REMOVAL
[*]Disconnect battery ground cable.[*]Remove steering column trim shroud. For tilt column only, remove upper extension shroud.[*]Disconnect electrical connector from switch, Fig. 1.[*]Rotate ignition key to On (Run) position.[*]Drill out bolt heads securing switch to lock cylinder using a {1-8} inch twist drill. Remove bolts using an ``Easy Out' or equivalent.[*]Disengage switch from the actuator pin.[/ol]
INSTALLATION
[*]Adjust switch by sliding the carrier to the switch On (Run) position.[*]Check to ensure that the ignition key lock cylinder is in the On (Run) position by rotating the key lock cylinder approximately 90 degrees from the Lock position.[*]Install switch onto the actuator pin.[*]Secure the switch with new break-off head bolts. Tighten bolts until heads shear.[*]Connect electrical connector to switch.[*]Install steering column trim shroud. For tilt column only, install upper extension shroud.[*]Connect battery ground cable.[*]Check for proper operation.[/ol]
The lock cylinder part is a lil easier.

RE: Swaping Ingition Switch
I appreciate everyone looking out for my interest. I fixed it. Good call "PRO50SC" It was a loose connection harrness on the switch. Just wire tied around the column, a quick fix for now, she is solid and starts everytime. Once again I appreciate your efforts man! You Rock [sm=icon_rock.gif][sm=icon_rock.gif]
