The Mustang is running again, but with 2 orange headers.
I finally got my car started today after changing some things. I set the timing to 0 to try to start it but I had to adjust the distributor some to get it to start and stay running. I haven't set the timing yet. After it was running for a few minutes the header tubes on #3 and #4 were glowing red. Those were the only ones though.
I did a search and found it could be timing or a lean condition. I'd think if that was the case it would make all the headers that hot.
Heres what's on the car:
Holley 600 vac. secondaries, elec. choke
weiand 8006 dual plane intake
289 heads with larger valves
speed pro cs-195r cam
roller rockers
Please Help!

Do you have a timing light. If not, go borrow one and crank the car and be sure what your timing is set at. When I fired up my car the first day, timing was retarded so much that it was running hot as all get out through the exhaust that it colored my chrome headers really quickly. I was angry about that, but it made them look as if they have a ton of miles on them now.

I have a timing light. I have to get it to idle first. The throttle bracket needs to be moved forwards because the cable is pulling the throttle open on the carb a little.
Do 85 distributers have a spout connector? I don't remember seeing one. I'll put a mark on the harmonic balancer where 12 degrees is and see how that goes.
Also, do you think the 600 is enough carburetor? I have a 650 dp Holley too.

Pull the throttle cable off of the carb if it is making it run/idle to high, just set the idle screw a little high and adjust it from there. The 85 should be a duraspark set up so the thing MJR suggested doesn't apply to your application. Just crank your car and if will run at all, you should have full timing in by 3500 rpms or so. You can check your timing this way if it will not idle. You should be fine around 35-36 degrees total timing. A 600cfm carburetor is plenty, but you can run what ever carb you want on there. I had a 310cid engine that I ran a holley 600 on it for years.

nevermind about the spout, I thought you were efi......just pull the vaccum line to the vac advance when setting base timing and a 600 carb is plenty
