Default Coolant leak and torque Spec question?

I just had a motor put together by a local shop its a built 347 with arp studs. One stud is having coolant dribble up the inside threads and leaks, I'm being told this is common and I should remove the stud and apply plumbers putty and re torque it. Does this sound right? What is the torque procedure and spec for these studs?

Thanks,
Steve

The lower row of head bolts thread into the water jacket and must be sealed with thread sealant to keep them from leaking. I used a soft set sealant and all of them seeped, so I drained the coolant, took each one out one at a time, cleaned the threads and used a hard set sealant and no more leaks. Don't use plumbers putty... use a hard set thread sealant or RTV instead.

I use a thread sealer with teflon from Permatex, no leaks. Just don't get crazy with whatever you put on, remember the space in the threads is a very small space, so you only need a light coating on the threads, otherwise you may get blobs of crap down in the cooling system clogging up your radiator. I'm constantly amazed at how people think they need to use massive amounts of sealers and RTV in areas that are only a few thousandths of an inch wide.

Thank you for the responses.

Does anyone know the torque spec and procedure for installing this stud back in?

Thanks again.

I agree with how people over use sealers, but its physically impossible for the sealer to drip down into the water jacket, the threads at the top would just pool the sealer all around itself.

That's true, but some people put a big blob on the end of the bolt, so it just gets carried down without ever contacting the threads.
