Default timing question with pic

so my buddy has a 91 gt that he just bought and it runs a bit rough, we thought timing was off and looked at a bunch of other 5.0's and their distributor is angled much more than his is, where the connector is on his is way more horizontal than all the pics we saw, we tried adjusting it using the directions from the tech section although we didnt have a timing light but it kept stalling out when it gets close to "looking like the rest of the 5.0's " does this look like his timing is off or should we be looking at other stuff, it has a rough idle

You can't tell if the timing is off by looking at the distributor. You need a timing light.

by memory... i wanna say the #1 plug wire on the cap should be at about the left side of the upper intake base (of course this is a very broad range to be in) but it looks good to me

borrow a lite from autozone or whatever, you HAVE to have a light to get it right... dizzy placement might get you w/in 10* but you need a light

set it to 12* and be happy w/ running 89 or even 87 when it's not over 90* out

you want to start the car, remove the SPOUT, set the timing.. replace the SPOUT and your good.

and since you've never done it... chalk the timing marks B4 you start it, might need to bump it over a few times to get it right on the bottom. you cam also paint a line right on the 12* mark... you want the 12* mark in the 0-30 range.. not the 0-20 range (might be 0-10 on one side and 0-20 on the other... it's been a while... but either way it's the larger scale of the 2 which is BTDC, the other is ATDC)

Timing has nothing to do with how the dizzy sits, that's how I made mine sit as I didn't like the look of it coming straight out. So I made the TFI sit flush with the head, since I have no A/C or P/S. All that means is the dizzy was moved on the cam gear a tooth. You have to check it with a timing like.

You can see how I have mine set-up here

You should make sure that your distributor is oriented right or it might not be performing its best.. Get your engine to TDC on #1 compression stroke and take the cap off and see where the rotor sits in relation to the stator magnet.. Here is a link to the reasoning behind this.. This is great info in this link!!!!
