you shouldnt be milling your heads to gain compression. it should be a subsequent result of "decking" your heads to make sure they are squared up. best thing you could do is port your bowls, smooth out the transition that goes into the bowl of the head on intake and exhaust side. you could also increase valve side, especially on the exhaust port. i have 1.94/1.6's on my 289 heads.

here is the the gt40p exhaust ports, you really need to open them up or your'll have negative effects of flow.

^^ i did this with my heads. here is what they did look like

and now

my 289 heads are 52cc chambers but i had to get a bit milled off to square them up. so now they are like 50.9 cc's pretty sure im damn near 10:1 compression. in this picture you can see how close the valve is to the deck of the head.

here is how small they use to be.

as for cam choice. if you want OTS get something thats dual pattern with longer exhaust lift/duration for make a more efficient motor. i made a poor choice in cam because i didnt really know better...dont make the same mistake i did.

when i did my porting i really took my time to make sure everything was equal. thats a big mistake most DIY'ers do when self porting. you need to measure everything. for one to make sure everything is port matched, but CC volumes is also the key factor to make sure each cylinder is operating properly.

here is an example of how to measure cc's. i used a CC glass beeker...but this works too.
