Any ideas

Your speedo is operated by a cable that runs from your transmission up to the back of your speedo assembly. For some reason the line inside the cable housing has stopped turning, either because it has popped out from the speedo itself or the tranny, OR, most likely, it has simply twisted off inside and separated due to age/mileage, and is no longer able to turn up at the speedo head.
The speedo cable is fed transmission fluid from the tranny as it turns in order to keep it lubed, but this process works from the tranny up on upwards inside the cable.
A few years ago I had to change my speedo cable because I noticed little tranny fluid stains on my driveway and discovered that the cable itself had been rubbing on a sharp edge of the car's undercarriage, for years, and had finally worn right through, allowing the tranny fluid to leak out.
The cable, if a recall correctly, was cheap and installing it was a bit of a bugger because you have to get in behind the speedo from the bottom. I had my dad do it for me because he's smaller that I am and could squeeze in to get it done.
There remains one final, unlikely possibility, which is that your cable is fine, and properly mounted, but that your speedo assembly itself has failed.
Good luck and keep us posted!
PS - now when the cops pull you over you have a good excuse - broken speedo - that just happened that morning and you were on your way to get it fixed!!
