Distributor gear question

I am converting my 92 5.0 to a carb. I have a distibutor from an 85 and a distributor from an 87. Can i swap the gear off of the 87 to the 85 to make it work with the cam?

Buy a new steel gear.

whats the easiest way to tell the difference in a cast iron and a steel gear?

And what would happen if you hav a steel gear and the parts store gives you a cast gear, how long would it take to mess things up and what would it do
