Stumbles around 2-3k under load
I just put a new trans, clutch, flywheel, and new plugs in, (last time I drove it was back in early fall before the temps dropped and my trans exploded). I just got it back on the road and the temps are lower.
Now it runs like poop. Around 2k it has a stumble and pop. Before and after that it runs fine. Cruising along especially in 3rd or higher it just sputters but never dies. If I try to get on it while it's in that range it sputters harder but never dies.
Before this it was running fine, highway was smooth and had power.
The details.
Holley 600 carb, edelbrock rpm air gap intake, msd ign(vac adv hooked up to right spot, makes no difference at all if its on or off). Everything else is stock as far as heads and valve-train goes.
A friend of mine saw me drive off and said it blew black smoke when i got on it, so I've been playing with the carb and have made some advances, it's not nearly as bad of a sputter but it's still there. The exaust isn't smelling as bad and no longer burns the eyes which he said to lean it out until it stops.
My concern is I hooked up the vac gauge to tune the carb and it bounces between 16 and 22 fast which I've read is a sticky valve. I pulled the valve covers and the lifters and stuff have no up and down play, the springs are not broken, etc.
The passenger side breather has a steady light smoke which burns my eyes, but had this before the trans blew.
I plan on doing a compression test next week, I did cylinder 5 today, and it read 140 psi. The other cylinders back are a PIA!

probably the plugs
what plugs did you use? if they are platinum throw them away and replace with stock coppers and gap them at .046"
if they ARE stock coppers regap them from whatever you had down to .046"

Turns out cylinder 3, somehow i buggered up the electrode installing it, it was pushed closed, so no spark, so ran like crap. Threw coppers in there and did a compression test and all cylinders were 120 on the dot. Adjusted the carb and she runs great now! Time to break in the trans and start restoring her.
