373 Posi
First post hopefully i'm in the right place, if not let me know where to go next time.
I have a 93 lx 5.0 and I want 373's done the right way. I want posi rear also(is that the same thing??).
Can i just change the internal gears without pulling the whole rear? also, is there a way to find out what the rear has in it out the factory?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, not many trustworthy mechanics in nyc and I would like to know what I'm talking about if I have to bring it to a shop, but I do know my way around a garage and may be able to handle it myself.
Thanks

There should be a tag attached to one of the housing cover bolts, you can use that to get ratio. Also, jack it up and spin the tire 1 full revolution, and count driveshaft spins.
2.73, 3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 4.1 are the most common amount of spins you might encounter.
Posi = limited slip. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited-slip_differential
Installing gears is not for the faint of heart, it requires a great deal of precision, or it will go boom on the very first drive. You should be able to pickup a gearset, rebuild kit, and have it all installed for roughly $600 total.

I would recommend Ford Racing parts for the gears. You can pick up an entire kit with the gears, gear oil, friction modifier, etc... for around $250. You'll need everything that is in the kit in order to install the gears. Here is a good kit:

As mattdel said, installation takes a certain level of expertise that is not possessed by the average weekend mechanic. I'd leave it to the pros.
Also, I believe that you can check the sticker on the inside of your drivers side door in order to find the code for the gear set installed on your LX.
I hope that helps.

do not try to install gears yourself unless you have all the specialty tools and actually know what you are doing. its not simple and if you are off a little you can ruin the rear. your car comes with limited slip(posi) from the factory. while you are having someone install the gears it wouldnt hurt to freshen up the clutch packs for the LS while he is already in there. latemodelrestoration.com has great stuff and so does buyfordracing.com

search craigslist for a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe rear from an Automatic car and also the junkyards...they have 4 lug disc brakes and factory 3.73's(the manual cars came with 3.55s)
