Default Oil pressure sending unit and extension questions

Hello all,
I have been noticing that I am leaking a decent ammount of oil, I have always had an occasional drip from the oil pan bolt (always forget to buy a new one when I change oil) but just recently I have noticed that I am getting a large ammount of oil and oil buildup around the oil sending unit, specifically the little extension tube that comes off of it. Basically my question is what are the steps when replacing the sending unit, I have heard it is pretty easy but a nice step by step process would be good. Also, do I have to replace the little metal extension with the unit or can I simply clean it up and re-use it? Thanks in advance!

Id just try and tighten it up a bit , they have been know to loosen up over the years. Also do you have an after market gauge or is it the stock dash gauge? The stock gauge sending unit will have a single wire going to it and an after market guage will likely have a plastic or maybe even small copper tube.

Thanks for the reply dawson, and I will probably try just tightening it up as you mentioned, and it has an aftermarket oil gauge that the guy before me installed, there is a little copper tube running from the extension. does eveything just tighten up with a wrench or do I have to remove the extension thing to access the actual sending unit? **** for all I know the extension thing could be where the actual leak is taking place.

Id try to determine where the leak is coming from first, Most likely the extension is leaking at the block. You should be able to use a small wrench I think its a 3/8 but im not for sure. If its leaking at the copper tube that is a type of compression fitting. Just try to snug it all up while its still attached . If it wont stop leaking after that you may have to take it all apart and use some Teflon thread tape on the extension where it threads into the block. If the leak is at the compression fitting on the tube it should stop by tightening it up a bit.
