are there any obvious signs of a blown head gasket?

One way you can tell is white smoke coming from your pipes. The exhaust fumes will smell kinda sweet. Change your oil and see if there is coolant in it. Pull out your spark plugs and check them for coolant. You would have a noticable loss of power too.

Take your radiator cap off & rev up the engine. If it's blown it will shoot coolant all over the place, if it's not then nothing will come out.
