strait edge?

strait edge?
What type do you guys use when your checking block/cylinder head surfaces?
I have a good feeler guage, but what I have for a strait edge is just a carpenters type triangle ruler thing made of aluminum. don't exactly trust that it itself is free of inconsistencies.
I ask because the spare motor I bought to have rebuilt to replace mine was missing the passenger side head gasket, and judging from the valve train being set up properly, and the heads torqued down when I tore it apart, im guessing it was run without the head gasket.
thanks.
P.S. Haven't been around this section to much as of late. Hope everyone's projects are doing well.

I was thinking the same thing. A shop could check it for cheaper then I can get a proper tool.

the cylinder bores look like they have fresh cross hatch/hone marks..... REAL fresh. but the stock timing chain was on there, and it had a TON of slack, worse then my motor when I replaced it, and I had 150,000 miles at the time.
