Thanks cryptic, I don't plan on doing subs.
Yes the quote was high. I know this. Retail stores like to think the customer doesn't do research. I just use them to hear the components. The internet is my friend.
For example, suggest retail on the JL XR 3way components is $599.99. You can find them online for $359.99.
While I was in Tweeter I asked 2 key questions any consumer should ask. 1) Do you price match 2) Will you install components if I source them myself. Not saying I'd want them to do the install, I'd have to see their work.
The answer to both questions was a resounding yes btw.
edit: btw if you think tweeter's price was insane I got a quote for a similar system using Focals for $4,400 from the specialty car audio shop nearest me. Now that's insane.

you can also save money by keeping your head unit and using speaker level input adapters (not quite sure what there called), then be able to run the rest of your system with a bit more money...and keep the factory look/unit. it works just fine and you won't be able to tell the difference.

Why dont you make some suggestions of your own instead of bashing what others suggest

JL Audio and MB Quartz both sound great in the Mustang. You really cant go wrong with either one. JL makes durable subs and I would use the MB Quartz for mids and highs. It will cost you a little but the sound quality cannot be beat. JL also does not require a huge enclosure to produce the high DB's and clarity. Thats my two cents

i just got all JL speakers
i got the lower end TR speakers and a 12' w3v3 sub. Got 250/1 amp for sub and 300/2 amp for speakers
paid ~$1600 for it all
it is really really clean, no distortion, real loud
friend's 12' audiobahn is louder than my sub tho and he paid half of what i paid
i really enjoy having that sound quality
and i know there are other speakers i could of gotten for the same price, but im happy with the JLs

I have had success with Alpine and Clarion Products. They arent as high end as some but they are resonably priced and fit a wide range of applications. I currently have 2 type E subs, Not alpine's best by any means but they still pound great. My head unit, an Alpine CDA-9847 has been great and offers a ton of scalability. THe best part of the type E subs is that I can get away with .8 cubic feet of volume which isnt too bad at all. I have also found prices at onlinecarstereo.com to be quite good and for less than 400 bucks I can get the front and back speakers plus a 4 channel amp to make everything in the car Alpine
