Hey CrimeScene--that's great! Happy to hear you're looking into a classic.
+1 to THUMPIN's remark on the vintage power steering--they're not the best units around (leaky and sloppy). If memory serves me, most performance oriented folk swapped out the power steering on these years for the manual steering, since it was much tighter.
The 68 I had came with manual steering and once it was going over 5mph you couldn't tell it wasn't power.
I was interested in the R&P conversions but never got around to doing this. In some respects, the swap is easier if your car doesn't have power steering--less to take out. The conversion kits are pretty complete in terms of not having to reuse parts from the stock systems. So no, you don't need to start with power steering to convert to R&P.
As for figuring out the rear end, I'd have to look up my decoder. I don't really remember if it's coded in the VIN, but I'll check.
