Trouble starting my 65'
Hi my name is Charles. I'm kind'a young and just starting to learn about my car.
I'm having trouble starting my 65' mustang. It's a v8 289 2bbl auto. It cranks and continues to turn, but a cloud of smoke puffs(making a loud 'popping' sound') out of the carb. It seems like too much fuel is going into the carb, but I took the fuel line out and started it and seems like the fuel is flowin' just fine.
Before this problem occured. I had replaced the starting solenoid, plug wires, rotor and cap, that is it. I replaced these parts cause I thought it would help fix the starting problem that i have been having. When the engine is cold it would start up fine but after it has been warmed up and turned off, the engine has a hard time starting. The engine wants to start, but it just seems like there is not enough of something to ignite it fully. I have also change the battery and spark plugs. Any advice would do good. Thanks

You most likely don't have your plug wires hooked up in the right order. The firing order for that 289 is 15426378
The cylinder numbers are from the front of the passenger side to the rear. 1-2-3-4
and on the driver's sice from front to rear 5-6-7-8
The #1 wire on the top of the distributor is right at 1:00 o'clock, then go counterclockwise to hook up all the rest of the plug wires.
As far as your car not wanting to start after it gets hot, check to see if you have a spacer under the carb. You may be boiling the gas in the carb. If you don't have one, then buy a phenolic spacer and put it on there.
Also, check your timing. You should be running somewhere between 6-8 degrees BTDC. Double check you points setting for right at 0.017

if I read it correctly the engine runs fine cold, runs fine after it's warmed up. but when you turn it off and let it sit for a while it won't restart.
it sounds to me like the fuel from the carb is draining in to the manifold while it's sitting and flooding the engine.
if it doesn't start at all now cold or hot. i'll bet soaring has the correct answer.
