umm i believe e4od is bigblock since it came on 460's but there is aod, aode, 4r70w(beefed up aode), and then some people consider certain maunuals over drive like t-5, t-56,t-3650
i think on those i don't remember the manuals very well

the aod(non electric) is the best suited automatic overdrive tranny, the t-5 would be the most swapped overdrive manual ,followed by the tremec maybe a few t56(cobra/viper six speed) the 4r!@# is to big for a stang as is the e4od

Just my opinion from what I've read but the AOD ain't the way to go anymore. It was good in it's day but the AODE and the 4R70W are way better. The AODE has a thicker, simpler, and much more reliable valve body that ain't likely to warp like the AOD's. The AODE's also all came with the 2 inch wide overdrive band and an A (Largest) overdrive servo. The input shaft is much stronger on the AODE than the AOD. And the AODE has a lockup converter clutch rather than a mechanical, gear dependant lockup. So you can have 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear locked or unlocked. You don't therefore have to decide between streetability and performance. You can have lockup for efficiency and unlocked for better acceleration. The 4R70W has all of the above improvements with the addition of a lower first and second gear ratio to help acceleration. After 1998 the 4R70W came with a mechanical diode intermediate one way clutch and an even better input shaft. Depending on what motor you have you'll have to get a 4R70W from behind either a 4.2 litre or 5 litre. Go to to Baumann Electric Controls on the net as they sell the improved valve body for like $30.00 and the electric control unit to control this electric trans. for around $450.00? The 4R70W ain't much diff in size than the C4 from what I've seen. It should work in your car but again ask the guys at Baumann Electric cuz they're the guys who have experience in these swaps. By the way, with the new valve body in the 4R70W you can put 500 or more Hp in front of it without a problem ... like stroker sized 351's or 302's. Good Luck hope this helped.

I run an AOD, the AODE needs electronics to make it shift properly. Don't have any experience with the 4R70W and don't know anyone running one at the track yet . Try this site for info.

You've done your research. The Baumann TCS is $425
I like being able to program it myself and design different shift strategies.

The 4R70W is the later version of the AODE type and definately needs the computer for control. Ford did build a small block E4OD, it was used in trucks, however, it is computer controlled and will not work with a carbureted engine (believe me, I researched all I could for my truck). The newer version of the E4OD is the 4R100.
