Ohh boy you kids need some good old fasion education. HA you guys should hang out where I live. We sit on the city square next to the county courthouse in my buddy's 68 and do burnouts and leave huge plumes of smoke. Worst thats happened yet, we got one little bitty ticket for squeeling tires. Apparently the cop was impressed.

Anyone heard about a line lock system to lock the front brakes. Back in high school (mid 70s) afriend had a 70 Coupe that had some like this.He could sit there all day and burnout.

I mean its just popping the clutch slamming the brakes and holding the car at around 3000 rpm...right?
Is that how that works?? I've always wondered. So you dump the clutch and just switch your left foot over to the break? Doesn't that wear down the rear brakes? Is it different or harder to do if you have drums all around?

Smoky tires 101

Roll back/simple fast start burn with a stick - aka "Peeling out":

(7 meg)

Power brake to start burn with an auto and then take off

(7 meg)

Power brake to start smoke and then simply letting off the brakes just enough to get the car to roll at the same time

(12 meg)

You can power brake anything and make the tires smoke

Yes they make line locks, you can get them from speeds shops or summit/jegs.

Rollbacks with a C4 will end up with broken bands or other parts. Another thing you should never do with a C4, or any automatic, is full power in reverse then slam it into first. That breaks things quickly so dont do it.

Burnouts wont hurt anything if done properly. If you have a locking type diff, you need to be sure both wheels are turning, or you will burn out your posi. The proper procedure is to initially spin the tires as hard as you can, that way you can have a better chance of the diff locking instead of slipping since both tires will spin and there is a bunch of toqrue applied to the diff.

Doing it constantly on dry pavement will wear your tires down quite fast, higher tire pressures seem to make it easier to do it, so does water. Bleach will make a huge amount of smoke but it will also dry out your tires, they will develop cracks in the rubber from bleach use.

At a dragstrip you back into the waterbox, pull forward untill you are out of the water, hit the tires hard, hold it for a second or two, then ease off the brake. the car will move forward but before it really gets moving you lift off the gas and you will feel the tires hook. Burnouts with rear gears 3.70-4.56 should be done in 2nd gear, while 2.41-2.55 gears should be done in 1st gear. Do not do dry hops, just execute the burnout as above but vary the length of time to see what works, then do it the same way every time.

Most of the cars I have dont need me to hold the brakes, infact the toy will push the front tires across dry pavement and out of the lights at the track. So I leave off idle with it. In most of the cars outside, full throttle under 35mph will result in tiresmoke. I gotta be carefull when crossing streets in heavy traffic, some cops think that a little squeal meant I was hard into it..lol. its just 500ftlbs trying to get through a 275 tire..

Guess I'm just getting old. Back in the day the sling shot dragsters would burn their tires the whole way down the track cause they didn't understand spinning tires do not make you go faster. Now the dragsters work very hard to prevent wheel spin because it HURTS acceleration. I just do not understand burning down tires and braking parts for the sake of a seeing tire smoke and track marks on pavements. If you want to impress me post a 0-60 time under 5 sec.
But then I do not understand boomer stereos either.

Some of the new cars have traction control and it must be turned off before you can light the tires up, once this is done they are very capable of doing a burn out.
