Default 289 2V Choke

The previous owner of my Mustang upgraded the engine from a 2 barrel carb to an Edelbrock Performer intake and 4 barrel carb. The old intake and carb were includedin the sale. The new carb came with a manual choke that is not hooked up. The old carb doesn't appear to be electric. It looks like some sort of vaccum hose might have hooked up to it. Can anyone tell me how the original choke worked, and if there's something I can do short of routing a manual choke cable through the firewall.

The old choke on the 2100 had a heat riser tube hooked to it. The heat from the exhaust manifold ran up a tube to the spring loaded opener. As the spring got hotter, the butterfly opened more and more until it was completely open. Then, when the spring got cold the butterfly closed again. You are going to have to hook up the manual choke cable to that carb since it does not have the heat riser spring, etc. on it.

Does that mean I should find a plug in one of my exhaust manifolds? Or is it on the back of the intake manifold?

There should be an indention on the top and to the rear of the passenger side of the exhaust manifold if you still have the original manifold and not headers.

The stock right exhaust manifold has two 1/4 inch diameter holes at the rear for the choke tubing, on on the top and one on the bottom. More often than not, the old tubing is broken off and removal and drilling is the best answer. New choke tubing sets cost under $20.00.

But then he would need the round black housing with the spring in it on the carb, and he doesn't have that. I don't know about the Edelbrock choking system, but I thought it was either electric or manual.

Hi ,

if you have an autolite2100 (left carb in pitcure)

then it works as Soaring says. more details in next post (picture from ponycarbs.com)

the spring will close the choke plate on top of carb.
when you accelerate, air will be pulled from vacuum passage to pull down piston ans slightly open the choke plate. Hot air from the exhaus manifold connected to heat tube will heat up spring. So when the engine is warm the spring will have the choke plate fully opened. That's the basics. Further down is a good link on how to adjus
t all choke when carb is cold.
You can do it with the carb off the engine (which is your case I guess).
If you have gheaders then you cannot connect the heat tube. It works for me that way. Not as good though. takes longer to open. I blocked it to get no dirt into carb (with isolating tape). Soaring once posted a link for a part you might be able to connect to get this working with headers. He might still have that.

Most important. when engine is warm the choke plate must be fully opened for full performance. Otherwise you'll reduce the flow.
