Which Mufflers?
After warming up the engine in my '65 GT (about 300hp) and having a custom 2-1/4" exhaust installed, they cut the pipes (1-3/4"?) off the stock trumpets and custom mated some 2-1/4" up to it. It worked and looked like a champ and if it cost me a few HP it was worth it! As for the grime, it does happen, similar to the way the 5.0L stainless pipes out the back would grime up it you didn't occasionally clean them as well. It really was a non-issue.
I liked them so much that I'd put them on my current fastback build except that it is not a GT, and for some reason, I can't bring myself to add them.

I went with the flowmaster 40 series on 2 1/2" pipes. I love the sound but they get a bit loud inside the car, I have been told the 40 series deltaflows will give you the same roar outside with less growl inside....

Yeah, my car already has the trumpets on it. I have not had an issue with the grime, but as stated, I did years ago when it was running rich.
I am really confused now, ugh.
I am curious about the Borlas.
The Magnaflows are getting great reviews.
The Flowmaster has turned almost legendary.
Turbos are always safe.
My buddy's '66 Fastback, in high school, sounded amazing with collectors. His had the best tone to my ears. Actually, i am not sure if they were collectors or just burned out glasspacks.
Remember the days when you would run your glasspack car until it was real hot and then hit the glasspacks with the cold garden hose to break 'em up? Am I dating myself? Geez...I'm only 37.

Jeff,
The 'Trumpet Exaust Tips' were part of a performance option in 64 and 65, pre GT.
Stainless cleans up nice and the excessive 'carbon' means you are running too rich.

Good info as always!

Just hearsay, I guess then but I have read a few posts back a while ago that didn't like the GT trumpets. I believe they stated that the exhaust collects around the tips and produces a black grim around the trumpet end which is tedious to clean. I'd be curious to find out about those tips being restictive tho??

The black crap was a combo of running rich down low, the moisture that condenses in the pipes after coldstartsand the use of unleaded fuel. the problem with the trumpets andmy other theory behind the restriction, was that the black crap forced its way out the edges of the cap instead of out the slots. it meant the rear of the car was always covered in crap too. dunno if they were any better in 65.
now running s/steel tips. No crap on the tail, easier to clean and less restrictive. that's my experience for what its worth.
