are they fresh? are they needing a valve job? just keep in mind that for 600 bucks you can get a set with new larger valves, new stiffer springs, all machined and assembled and ready to bolt on. so, theres the benchmark for what any used set may be worth.

they are great performing heads for the price (recon'd or used), just keep in mind you will need headers that will work with the P's because of their revised spark plug angles

Stay away from the P-heads. They will only make your things more difficult and cost you more money. First you have to get new headers, which in my case (MAC P-specific headers) interfere with my r&p and my hydraulic clutch. Not to mention, the plugs are right next to the header tubes on the driver side. It will cost you more in the long run to have these headers.

Budget wise, here is what i would suggest, save up buy some decent aluminium heads, (edelbrock, jegs, etc) Put some 1.7 full roller rocker arms on them and there ya go! It's like upgrading your cam and heads at the same time... pretty darn good budget deal!

Add a + to what evilkemest said. If needed, classic cast iron Hi-Po manifolds will fit the P heads.
The GT-40(nonP) are a better selection. They actually have better averaged(through the power band) HP & torque than the P's, which to a slightly better peak HP & torque. Port match the intake & exhaust, and grind down the EGR bumps, and the standard GT-40 heads are about the best Ford production head. Bigger valves can be added, for an economy performance head. Standard GT-40's dont need a special exhaust manifold, either. Biggest detractor to them is the large combustion chamber, that would need pistons to raise the comp ratio.
