Default new power steering problem

well i replaced my control valve and steering ram on my 70 mustang. worked great for 20 or so miles. now after 30 or more miles when i stop it feels like manual steering until i get going, then it clears up and i have power steering again. its done this 3 times to me know but only after going more than 20 miles. i bought a new belt and tighten the hell out of it but it still does it. before i removed the old control valve i measured the distance of where the old one was located and installed the new one at the same distance, which was more than the specs called, i think 5&1/4 inches instead of 5 inches the book says. my only guess is the control valve is bad. when i started the car, wheels off the ground, it didn't move either way and steering feels equal. what am i missing.

I know im not going to sound like much of a help but I would take it out, I personally hate power steering, and I learned to drive with power steering.

EDIT: you have oil in it right?

Maybe you've knocked loose some dirt into the system while doing the swap. Piece of old hose, dirt, etc.. My friend put a filter on the return line and cleared up his problem. Cheap and easy fix. Good luck.

Dont know if you have headers on the car or not but on my 70 the headers were very close to the ram and I was having the same problem. After 30 or 40 miles of driving it would get tough.I think it might be caused by overheating of the power steering fluid. There is a bracket made to lower the ram a few inches.hopefully that will solve at least some of the problem.I wont know for awhile as the car is stripped and almost ready for paint but I thought I'd throw this out there as it seemed like similar symptoms.

Anyone have any input on this? I would like to know if this could possibly be the problem

As far as pulling the power steering out,I'd love to,but the "Boss" who lets me spend money on the car wouldnt like it very much,She likes the power steering

Hope this helps
Jeff

i don't have headers and the car never did this before. im thinking the control valve must of gotten something in it because its still doing it.

just thought id mention, i did replace my stock 5 bladed fan with a 7 blade flex-a-lite. its right after that that it started giving me problems but i replaced the fan the next day. so i did drive the car the day before and the steering felt fine.
