Nice car. I also would keep the drums in rear, and save for a new tranny.

I've been looking at a rear diskbrake conversion for my 9" that looks like it wouldonly cost a littlemore thanrebuilding the drums. Granted, my drum setup is shot and basically needs new everything except for the back plate. I figure it would cost me about $230 to totally rebuild the rear brakes with new hardware, adjusters, shoes, etc. If I want to go disks, I can do it new for $369 or if I decide to live without a parking brake I can do disk for $239. I still have to check to see if these will fit my particular 9", but I figure worst case is I would have to do some modification to the mount brakets. There is also the option of salvage yard disc brakes from something like an explorer. Bottom line is you don't have to spend $600 to get rear disc brakes.

Don't know where you live, but here a car won't pass inspection without a parking brake.

Rural Illinois doesn't have any inspections at all. Even in metropolitan areas (near Chicago or St. Louis) the inspections are only for emmissions. I think I would still rather spend the extra $150 or so for the disk brake setup that does have the parking brake. That's the direction I'm leaning right now.

I completely rebuilt my rear drum brakes with parts from AutoZone. The only original parts I kept were the backing plates. Total bill was $156.87, tax included. Nothing wrong with drums in the back.

$158 is cheap. I just priced it online at Autozone.com and for my 70 with 10 x 1-3/4 drums it comes to $176.92, $187.98 with tax. That's a little cheaper than I thought it would be, but I still may go with the disks. An extra $200 for a car I plan on keeping basically forever isn't a big deal to me in the long run. I agree that there isn't anything wrong with the drums, but I prefer the disks. It'll be at least springtime before I get to that point and my plan is to check out the salvage yard options before committing to anything.

No need to worry about that, MF.com has the best Mustang enthusiasts you will find anywhere on the net.

Im also doing a rear disc swap. Like said above, since I'm replacing everything, the disc setup cost little more than the drum setup. Plus you get the "cool factor"[8D]

And rear calipers are a pain. Integral parking brakes make for expensive and complicated calipers. It's not usually a simple pad-slap operation, you have to reset the pistons with a special tool.Shoes are cake if you know what you're doing.
Some aftermarket setups have no"in rotor" parkingbrakeand utilize the same caliper that is used for normal braking, Reducing parks, and price... I know the MarkVII conversion is like that...
