Its probably a 351m which is kinda crappy 351w or 351c would be better cheapest ford small block would be a 289/302.
I used to think that the "M" engines sucked, but after researching a little bit due to a post on the forum, I think they might not be too bad.

On paper they look very viable, and a couple of 400Ms did very well in Popular Hot Rodding's Pump Gas Shootout. They took 3rd and 6th place out of a field of 25 making 636 HP and 672 HP respectively....

But not much aftermarket for the bottom end, expensive parts, bigger and wider than a Cleveland, and the big bell housing bolt patern would be an issue for a Mustang....

All in all, I guess I still would not build an M motor though... too many hoops to jump through..

Dude - I'm sorry - but, as far as I'm concrned what makes the Mustang a Mustang isthe fact that it is a Ford - with parts built by Ford - just as a Camaro is a Camaro - with parts built by Chevrolet - we love these cars because of who built them and the heritage and history they represent -I can't imagine what it would be like to have someone admiring my Mustang and then I open the hood to show off my Chevy engine! - NOT! - we all question at times how far we should modify and will that repro part be ok - but, to do what you were thinking - please! - remember, we are all ambassadors of history with these cars - if you want to build a hot rod that's ok - but I think you would get more enjoyment in keeping your ride as close to what it was meant to be.

Go for the electric exhaust cutouts, if you can afford them. I have only found a couple, and they are usually about $300 or so, but I think they would be awesome to have so you can just flip a switch and have the sound and extra power. You will have a pretty hard time driving the car on the street, not to mention a HUGE headache. I was driving next to a guy with a camaro who had fake exhaust (it was pretty funny, he had open headers, which you could see dumping by the rocker panels, but he also had exhaust tips out the back, but you could see that those didnt hook up to anything) and it was extremely loud and obnoxious.
