I guess I should have been more specific of what I am after. This car is going to be a weekend car that I would like to be able to preform well on the track but still be drivable home. I would like to have at least 400bhp and would like to do this in the most reliable way possible. I don't need the cheapest when it comes to parts but I would like to keep the total engine cost reasonable too. The engine will be mated to a C6 tranny if that makes a difference. Thanks for all the replies.

It's a 400 HP Stroker crate engine. Costs about $5,500

Been down this road before and I won't do it again. You are correct, a 460 is too big and a 396/375 is a slow reving slug. n/m

I would stay with a small block. 460s are just to big.
And block to block the 327s are faster then the 396s. Small blocks rev faster

Go to any of the fastest musclecar lists and see how the small blocks compare. Out of the top 50, I think there are 4 small blocks included and they are no where near the top of the list. The highest ranking SB is the 71 Boss351 in about 25th place. The 62 Corvette 327 fulie placed in the mid-thirties. A 66 Shelby and a 64 289 Cobra ranked in the high fifties The rest were all big blocks.

As I said above (I revised my reply to you), you're absolutely correct.

Off the line the small block is over all faster. In the 1/4 the big block will over all win if you built the heck out of it. The big block can't hook up. The 289 Cobra would beat the 427 Cobra off the line. So block to block and on the street I vote for the small block.
