Default installing a timing chain cover

When installing a new chain cover, do I need to use that rubber seal that goes on the oval part of the oil pan?or use alot of sealent? Suggestions on keeping it from leaking?

A thick bead of sealant works very well. Some people use the rubber gasket and some sealant too.

I used the little pieces that came in the timing cover gasket set.. I wish I would have gone with the one piece rubber gasket.. just make sure you get the crank seal on there correctly and lubed so it dont leak.

we use the rubber pieces at work. but be sure to put extra silicone in the 4 corners. (shown in pic) red is where to put extra silicone. blue is where to put oil on the front seal.
