Default Rebuilding a C4 Trans?

What is the typical cost of rebuilding a C4 transmission if I take it to a trans shop? Would it be easier/cheaper to leave it in the car and take it down there or should I take it out? I have no clue about transmissions. Thanks!

I took mine down to the trans shop and had them rebuild and put it back in myself..it was a performance rebuild (new clutches, bands, shift kit, 2400 stall converter, new high perf planetary, etc etc, allthe typical performance rebuild parts) and parts and labor were about $700.Hope this helps. It was the original 67 C4 trans.

well if you want to learn the C4 is a very easy auto tranny to build. unlike most trannys that require special tools the c4 can be built with common hand tools iirc the most specialized tool i needed when i built my last c4 was snap ring pliers[8D]

if you do the R & R, a basic bench build is about $500. If you want a performance build you probably looking closer to $800 or $900. The performance parts = C-servo, hardened bands, extra clutches, modified valve body, stall converter, shaft upgrades, etc,all cost money. I believe you can get a stock rebuilt kit for under $100.The C-servo alone is over $100. A performance built C4 is well worth the money and can handle a load of hp.

The best $50 I ever spent on my car was installing a tranny cooler. My oil is always bright orange and with regular bienniel service my C4 may not have to be rebuilt again for 20+ years.

Now is an excellent time to install one.
