Default Cracked Head

While I had my car at the shop just yesterday for some help with my idle adjustment he told me I had a cracked head. I am planning a trip this weekend to Frisco it's about 50 miles from where I live. My question is would it be safe to drive the car that distance? It's a 289 bored .040 new 2 barrel, all the driving is going to be on the highway.

It depends. If you have been driving around and it hasn't been getting hot, it might be ok. Just be sure to periodically check the water level. I would probably get some liquid glass and put in it if I had to drive the car that far, but otherwise, I'd be finding something else to drive.

without seeing it noone will be able to tell you if you can drive.
tyler is right in saying if it was ok in the past it _might_ be still fine when you check the water
otherwise you can do serious damage.
hiow does that fella know the head is cracked? did he give any details?
I mean if there's a tiny crack at valce cover you might loose a tiny bit of oil, if it's between oilchannel and chanber then you might well destroy the whole engine driving it

impossible to tell without info

When my car had a cracked head (in 2 places) it drove but horribly. It acted like a blown head gasket and had coolant getting into the oil making it milky and all that. I would say it depends on the extent, but based on my car it would have only made the car worse off by driving it a long distance

Agreed. Not all cracks are the same. Are you loosing water? Are you buring oil? Is it smoking? Is it overheating? What are the symtoms? A buddy has been running three seasons with a cracked head on his nitro drag bike. It is not the end of the world if the crack is in the right place.

The car has overheated ONCE since the head was cracked...his only explanation was that it was clunking around when it started up. I'm not entirely sure if that is all he did, when I went to get food and I came back he was putting the valve covers back on SO he might have checked it but the car DRIVES fine. Like I said it has only overheated once, I'm about to pull the valve covers and see what I can find but I think I am going to make the trip because not only does it drive just fine it has only overheated once and I think its because I was driving it kinda hard.

I do trust this mechanic I do not think he would lie to me about this.
