I had my first car painted by a shop that was cheap (under $2,000) and I quickly found out why they were cheaper. The paint faded\cracked\chipped within a year. I've seen the work that the shop who is doing my 66 has done and... call me crazy but... I have no problem dishing out the $9,000+ that they will be charging me.

Granted $1,500 buys a lot lessin southern CA but I always live by the fact that "You get what you pay for."

 

1500 in california will get your hood primered and sanded. Quality custom shops charge 500-700 a panel for PAINT ONLY.....

 

When in college I painted my car. Purchased a used compressor, spray guns and leads. I think at the time it cost me
about $500 for good paint and all the sanding/cutting materials. I eventually sold the car for much more than I paid for it. Ended
up spray painting some friends cars and two cars for my family. To get started I practiced on old damaged panels.
The painting was easy and a lot of fun. The bodywork ( filling/sanding/cleaning ) was a pain but I mostly replaced bad
panels so did not have to do too much of that. It is not so difficult if you read up on it and find a relatively wind free
area to paint in. If the area you choose is old, then use plastic to cover walls and roofs so dust does not fall on your
handywork. Avoid metallic's or exotic paints for your first job as getting the paint consistent ( well mixed ) for the duration
of the whole job can be a pain.

I have never been much of a coupe fan, but I have to tell you, yours is a terrific looking car.

 

I've painted two of my cars, both under the guidance of a friend that owns a body shop. I actually surprised myself on the one I just finished, it turned out great. I had more moneyin painting my own than you guys are quoting though and there was no markup on the supplies, I bought them myself. What was supposed to be a two or three week paint job turned into several months. Here's a pic of the 68 coupe I just painted.
