Is the problem the retractor is too bulky? Can you put it on the other side?

The 3 pt belt on my 71 mounts behind the front seat so the retractor unit
has enough room. So you need to drill a new hole further back to mount
that unit. An easier way is to get another long lap belt and that would
go across your sholder. You would have to buckle 2 buckles each time though. Some of the early 3 pt belts came like that from the factory, so you could have the option of just a lap belt. Some people didn't like the shoulder belt when it first came out. That is what Carlos was talking about on his 69 (nice car btw).

Fakesnakes,
No it won't work on the other side, the shoulder and lap are the same belt in that unit. The part that mounts on the roof is just a guide so it goes over your shoulder. You have to mount the retractor further back on the door side.

the belt will get stuck between the seat and door sometimes but you just have to wiggle it around and it should be ok.

or like fakesnakes said, just swap sides. put the big retractor end on the tranny hump.
