If you're hitting 6k or more you'll want to watch the stock springs in the Edelbrock heads. I researched this quite a bit last year when buying for my first build (building the 351w next week finally!) and the RPM head springs are rated at 6500 for sure and iirc the Performer were 6000 rated. I bought the RPMs and setting the MSD rev limit to 5800 for the wife.

Spring rate can easily be changed but figured I'd post this in case you didn't realize their rates.

Thanks for letting me know, I'll have to keep that in mind. I do have Comp Cams double springs on my J code heads right now to keep up with my cam, so I can switch them over if I need to.

My plans have accelerated a bit since my small head gasket leak (coolant into chamber) has apparently turned into a more serious leak (coolant into oil). Wasn't doing that before:-|

So yeah, I need to find a set of good heads ASAP. Wasn't planning on having to do this short term. Downside of using this car as my daily driver...

Out of curiosity, is anyone here running Canfield 194/195s with raised exhaust ports on a 302 or 289? I'm wondering what you did for headers? I was thinking earlier that a 351W header would work since they have a taller deck height and that would rise the exhaust ports.

I would start your own thread about it. Given that 289/302 are 8.2" decks, 351C are 9.2" decks, and 351W are 9.5" decks I would think the exhaust port is not raised that much so if you use those headers, they would hang low. I would think custom headers are required. They are really not that expensive if you get to know a good performance race shop, but start your own thread and see what others think.
