Default How do I remove cap nuts - heater core cable

I'm removing the heater core in my 66 Mustang because the old one leaks.
I'm following the instructions on this web page:

http://www.mustangmonthly.com/howto/5769/index.html

But I get to the part where I have to remove the cap nuts off of the cables:
http://www.mustangmonthly.com/howto/5769/photo_12.html

I don't know how to do this. Do they screw off or pry off?
Any hints are encouraged since I'm a beginner.

That picture is horrible. I really can't see what he is pointing to.

However, cap nuts are supposed to be these: and can be removed with a box wrench or socket.

But they might be talking about something else because I can't see very well in that picture.

Have you started disassembly or are you just looking over the instructions before you begin?

I've got one cap nut off and I just spent an hour trying everything I can to get the other one off including: screwing, prying, pulling, pushing. My next step may be a hack saw. But I'm not sure if I can find a replacement cap nut.

Default How do I remove cap nuts - heater core cable - Done

Done. The hack saw worked. Don't know how I'm going to put that back together.

The cap nuts that hold the cables in place on my 65 are just pressed on. They look like little hats. I use pliers or kneedle nose pliers to get them off and on.

+1 on the needle nose pliers... you used a hack saw? does this mean you made the rod for the flap shorter? that doesn't sound good to me.

I think one time I had to hold the cap with some pliers and actually take a wrench and used it like a little hammer against the pliers and tapped it off.

Hopefully, you didn't cut the rod, then it will be too short like 4reboy said.

They push on. They pull off. A little twisting helps.

Default Cap Nuts - easy to put back on

Yes, okay. I was able to push the cap nuts right back on with the help of a pair of needle nose pliers.

A few problems - the cheap cardboard heater ducts broke. Used some duct tape - not the best solution.

One of the cables is real hard to get to move back and forth. Manually pushed and pulled it. Must just be old.

Are you talking about the plenum for the defroster etc. A plastic reproduction is availble. and its inexpensive. The defroster ducts are also not pricey either.
