Default top loader transmission

I have a 4 speed top loader transmission in a 66 mustang.not all the time but most of the time when i gear the transmission down it will kick out of second gear.I have been told it's maybe the throw out bearing.

That's pretty optimistic.....

I rebuilt my t5 new 1st/2nd gear and 1&2 slider all new bearings and syncros, blockers...it was perfect after I rebuilt then it started to jump out of 2nd gear after about 3000 miles of use... I took it the output shaft cluster to a shop they couldn't find anything wrong. I had them replace the 2nd gear syncro and slider dog tabs....ill let you know if it fixes anything...

How does it jump out of gear? The instant you start to let the clutch out or some time after the clutch is out?

How old is the trans?

Its probably a worn 2nd gear and syncro.

I'd try to adjust the linkages first. Easily done with a small drill bit. Instructions can be found in the Factory Service Manual.

Yeah, adjust the linkage. Otherwise it's probably worn dog teeth.

It kicks out after i'm off the clutch, but not at that very instant that I come off the clutch.Just sometime before I come to a stop or change in to first gear.

You sure it's a Ford trans? Some 66s came from the factory with the Warner T10, and they were notorious for coming out of gear when you let off the gas.

My 4 speed toploader does this in third gear when the engine is being used as a brake. Curious as to how this thread progresses.
