Are you saying that the VIN on the car and the VIN on the registration don't match? Even I could catch someone like that but that is not what we are talking about. And what of this inspection you speak of, inspection by whom? There are no inspections required in California unless the car is brought in from out of state. That is standard in most states.

California Vehicle Code 10750:

10750. (a) No person shall intentionally deface, destroy, or alter
the motor number, other distinguishing number, or identification mark
of a vehicle required or employed for registration purposes without
written authorization from the department, nor shall any person place
or stamp any serial, motor, or other number or mark upon a vehicle,
except one assigned thereto by the department.

When I get the VIN for the citation, I look at the VIN on the left side of the front dash. It is extremely hard to replace a VIN plate, including the rivots, to look original. We are talking about vehicles that are at least 40 years or older. I see a new VIN plate OR rivots that do not look 40+ years old, then I look harder at the car.

....if i was looking at a car that is 40+ yrs old and restored nicely, I would inspect the car quite nicely, in and out, over and under, check the motor and see what mods have been done, take a few notes and give the guy a pat on the back and say nice work and maybe even ask to give a nice burn out while pulling out!

For the record, there's a reason dynacorn bodies come with their own vin from the factory. Otherwise anyone could build one, buy a vin from a rust box and sell it as an original. Just wrong.

Riddle me this batman. I have a junk fastback. Whether it is wrecked, rusted to pieces, or whatever. I buy a rebody from Dynacorn. How, legally, am I supposed to get my VIN onto the new body? You hear a lot about rebody, but if you read my state's info from Dynacorn, it sounds like you have to re-VIN the car and it would be titled as a custom kit car 2011. I am not judging, but I am curious. I would love to buy a junk fastback, change the vin to a dynacorn body and race it as a 1967, 68, 69, or 70 depending so I do not cut up a good project car. I cannot find any definitive information on this and it sounds like most of us cannot either given all the different opinions in this topic.

The laws change from state to state as to what is allowed and what isnt allowed. For the real story a person should go to thier local DMV and a lawyer.

Its not that hard to get away with it yes it not legal to do but how can one tell. If you weld the vins in thats how u do it if you replace the apron anyways, i wouldnt worrie about doing it, but then again i would not tell people or make it known. We replaced on one vert almost every bit of sheet metal and had to take the vins off what we cut out wile doing the work and that not illegal.

You can do whatever you want to do, but I have arrested numerous people because of this. These cars are collectors items and will eventually have to bear some type of inspection. When I write a ticket I have to write down the vin, and I always check it with the vehicle because I am aware of people chopping up these cars with stolen parts.

Jails are full of stupid people who do stupid stuff. Do what you want.
In the last month how many decked out classic cars have you pulled over?

( Im not talking beaters either. Decked out fully restored head turners.)

Im sure the answer is ZERO to ONE. The odds of the average jo ticket writer knowing how to spot a false vin on his beat will be very slim to none when it comes to classics.

Modern 1995+ vehicles I will agree with you but classics is much harder since door tags can be bought and punched as well.
