It will last good enough, it will be a pia to get much build out of a spray can, imo all the spray can primer I have seen kind of lacks "body", not a lot of solids.

If you don't expect much build, and you are willing to give it plenty of time to dry before sanding and recoating, it can work.

Frankly, I would rather roll or brush good primer than use a rattle can, but I am an opinionated sob...

Im doing the same thing now. My concern is the water absorption of the primer. I need some panels replaced, but cant afford it, so I could see spending 500-1000 on paint. Im priming it for now until I have the money for the rest.

Like said above, it lays on really thin, but if you spray in sections, you can use multiple cans and build it up.

 

I think ill just take it to metal and borroe the gun buy some 2ks and go for it. Most of the 2k's i see are not for directly to metal spray. I found some self etching rattle can primer that ill lay on befor the 2k then block it out. Should i get a sealer for before base coating?

 

 

If budget is an issue, I'd use a low-end pro line line Nason. It is DuPont's collision shop line and is less expensive than the high-end DuPont stuff. I'd definitely use an epoxy primer. Skimping on the prep will make your expensive top coat temporary (a couple of years and your rattle can or laquer primer may come off the metal or separate from the top coat). You definitely want compatible paints. Best to buy all the same brand to be safe.

 

I found that a quart of ppg 2kshop is 34$ not too bad. Hopefully i can get everything for under $100. Ill rattle can undercoat the backs of the fenders..
