Default '69-Tinnerman nuts!!

Hello,
I need a hint with taking off my front drums. My Haynes manual says there are 3 tinnerman nuts to take off 1st. I believe I took off the wrong nuts, I found 3 on the rear of the drum and they look like the picture so I took them off. Now those 3 bolts have dropped into the rear of the drum. Could there possible been nuts on the studs at one point? I've hit it quite a few times with a sledge and sprayed in some PB penetrate but nothing is budging.
Any help would be much appreciated. I still have a long way to go learning all the ins + outs.

Thanks, Joe

tinnerman nuts are thin flat nuts that go on the wheel studs at the factory to hold the drum inplace until the wheel is bolted on. After the car leaves the factory they serve no other purpose and most got thrown away.

Using a flat screwdriver pry the dust cap off the center of your hub. Remove the cotter pin, retainer and nut. Shake the drum some and your outer bearing will slide out and you can store it someplace dust free. Your drum will slide off now.

This is a Tinnerman nut.

What you loosened were the T bolts that hold the brake backing plate on. You'll need to remove the drum to put them back. The Tinnerman nuts were installed at the axle factory to keep the drums on until the axle was installed in the car. Once the wheels are installed, you don't really need the Tinnermans, which were no doubt thrown away by the first mechanic to work on the brakes.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I took off the cotter pin and bolt. I think I just wasted $22 on that new Haynes manual. It says nothing of a pin or bolt.

Thanks for the insight.

The fronts won't have the tinnerman nuts just the rears. The front drum is attached to the hub.

You should pick up a manual for your car. I got one for my 66 and print off whatever section I'm working on if I need more than just a quick reference. It's great as you can print off just what you need, or if you want to brave a laptop in the shop you can take it out there with you.

The Ford Shop Manual is double the price, and 100 times the value.

If your drums are locked, you will need to pry off the rubber plug on the backing plate and then using two small flat head screw drivers, hold down the arm of the brake adjuster with one and using the second screwdriver adjust the brake adjuster upwards. This will relieve tension on the brakes and should allow you to remove the drum.

Difficult to get started but once you figure it out, its pretty easy.
