Default Winter Projects - More Power

What I have:
Car - 65 Mustang Fastback

Engine - 289 C code(rebuilt 1800 miles ago to original spec with new original style 2bbl carb), original manifolds, new 2 inch daul exhaust

Trans - 4speed toploader

Rear - 2.80 gears, leaf springs, drum brakes

Front end - TCP coil over suspension kit w/ all options, stainless disc brakes, KRC power steering, and 17x8 rims

What i'm thinking about doing:
New Intake and 4 bbl carb. (possibly eldebrock proformer w/ 500 or 600 cfm 4 bbl carb)

Headers (Tri-Y??????)

Gears???????

It's basicly a car to have fun with (shows, cruise nights, and sunday drives) but I would like to make if faster. My goal is around 14 to 14.5 1/4 mile car in terms of power. I know thats far off but someday. That why I want your suggestions. As for the suspension I already have my goal (coil-over rear would be nice but not going to happen).

I'm looking for suggestions on which parts to use and/or different mods I should do. Thank you for your suggestions.

Expense - I'm just looking for ideas, cheap to expensive let me hear them and then I'll decide if its worth it

Well, the first thing you are going to have to do is replace the heads with aftermarket aluminum heads assuming the bottom half is solid. A mild to mid range cam for street use. Then the aluminumum intake has to be added with a 4bbl carb. Next is the headers which could be the Tri-Y's, and then an X or H pipe and some good flowing mufflers. The idea is to get that engine breathing properly. But, by the time you add all that to your stock engine, you could probably buy a crate engine with all that already on it, then sell your stock engine. Just a thought. The heads alone will cost you over a thousand bux.

yeah, remember i wouldn't go over a 500 CFM carb unless you have aftermarket heads, and cam. Then i would go with a 550 to 600 CFM. People say to swap out the gears to a lower set, something like 3.55 or around there. Personally, i wouldn't go that far, YES. it gives you quicker acceleration, but lower top speeds, and it will turn higher RPMs.

i really like my headman full headers ... fit the motor well & the only mods i had to make was a little flatening of the tubes next to the botls (always a tight fit) & they only hang about 2" below my uni-body rails in the front.

Gears: 3.25 or so ... should be a good mix.
