Default 3spd or 4spd

Just wondering if there is any difference between 3 or 4spd transmissons that came on the 6cyls and the 3 or 4spds that came on the v8s?

well, since none of our more experienced guys have siad anything, i'll chime in with my rookie coments. first off, welcome to the site. don't worry, only a couple people bite. anyway, as far as i know, the tranny's were the same. maybe a different gear ratio if anything but i'm pretty sure they were the same.

bellhousings would have to be different from 6 to 8 cylinder, they might be interchangeable between transmissions.

the c4 trannys (being manual or auto) were bolted the same way as they were on a v8, the only diff os the bellhousing. i know the v8s had two more bolts that went on the back of the engine, not sure the exact number but u get my drift

Reason I ask is Im swaping the 289 from my wrecked 67 into a 6cyl 66 body. The 67 had the auto and the 66 has the 3spd. I would prefer to keep the 3spd for right now and then find a 4spd or t5 later on. Just wondering if I could use the 3spd that I have.

Change out the bell housing. The i6 3 speed is smaller.
