Broken Rear Defroster tab again on 06 Convertible
Hi, I have an 06 Mustang Convertible, which I bought Dec. 05 w/ 5yr. ext. warranty. The first time the rear defroster tab broke(driver side), was on Sept. 08. I just noticed it when I went to put on the rear defroster and noticed it wasn't working. Luckily, the car was under warranty and the dealer had to replace the whole top because they can't soder the tab back on the glass. Now again, I just noticed the tab broke again (Jan. 25,10) on the same side without any reason but my warranty had expired. What else can I do to fix the tab, without forking up over $1,000 to replace the top again. Do you no anyone else that had this problem?

Not that it will be cheap, but I'm pretty sure that the back glass can be replaced, independent of the top. How does the tab keep breaking? Rag catching on it from cleaning the window (maybe some goofball at your local carwash did it)?

Seems like I have seen some adhesive at the chain auto parts stores for this.
This top does NOT have the ability to be swapped out without changing the whole skin(convertible top cover). To replace the glass, you replace the whole top.
I can't imagine a shop installing one for $ 1000.00 out the door. That's cheap.

I haven't done this so I don't know if it will work but I've been wanting to try this. Superglue the tab back into place then use some of that solder-it paste to remake the connection. I have '96 Bronco that the tab broke off of and I tried to solder it back into place but I don't want to heat the glass up too much and shatter it. You may be able to glue it back into place and just lightly soldier the edges back. Its just an idea but if it works, you'll have it fixed. On the top, you are correct about the back glass. I have an 07 and that is what I was told, the whole top has to be replaced because the glass is glued in all the way around on both sides. It'd be interesting to know if insurance covers the top under the glass replacement on the policy since they cannot be replaced separately.
