Painted calipers
06BlackStang:
Relative to the amount of time it took to prep and paint the two tone job,
making & painting the stencils didn't add that much time,
perhaps another hour or two of work. Since you have
to wait for the base coats to dry, you have some time to make
the stencil. But if you are an artist, you could just paint them on.
Me, I'm much better with a wrench then I am with a brush,
so here is how I made the stencil:
1. Found a graphic that I liked that wasn't too detailed
2. Copied it into ppt and sized it appropriately
3. Printed it out on a plain piece of paper (used for alignment)
4. Placed the sticky portion from an extra-large yellow post-it note
directly over the image.
5. Put this back in the printer & printed it out again.
(now the image is on the yellow post-it)
6. Cut out the image with a new e-xacto knife or razor blade.
7. Transfer this to the caliper
8. Sprayed two very light coats
(did not attempt 3 since the post-it paper starts to get "soggy")
I first tried some brown 3M painters tape thinking it would hold up better,
did not stick to the caliper very good. The post-it note is only good for one time.
I had to paint the kitchen last week and saw some new 3M "Blue"
painters tape. Didn't buy any but wondered if it would work.
I was concerned about the spray paint sticking to the G2,
since it forms such a glossy finish. Some of the finer features
did lift off when I removed the stencil, so keep that in mind
when choosing a design. It has held up for a couple of months now,
but I bet this would come off if I scratched it real hard with my fingernail.
Also: Use a brand new blade to cut it out.
I wasted a lot of time attempting to use an old dull blade.
went out & bought a new one and it was much easier.
Have fun!
