Default 99 Cobra rearend noise

Is it normal to have a small amount of gear noise coming from the rearend? Car has 50k, seems that it has always done this. Mostly noticeable when coasting down a hill.

Well do you burn out on youre stang? Some times the rear end gears called the spider gears in the diff, Usually get worn or chipped they cause the woa woa noise, Cause before my rear got rebuilt I had a bad humming sound at high speeds on thw hwy, My Ring and pinion gear were fine, But the spider gears and the 2 wheel bearings , then I got everything redone to save problems again. Plus is youre rear end clunks most cases its cause you got some play in the rear, If youre U joints arent loose.

Good Luck Man.

No burning out. Does have the description you mentioned though, kind of an oscillating sound. Probably a nice chunk of change to fix.

I am asumming you got a 8.8 rear end with stock gears? If youre just getting the spider gears replaced, parts and labour should only be under $300 US. But the only way you know whats wrong with youre rear end is if you get the rear apart to see whats going on in their, I would get the spider gears replaced with new ones if they are worn, Cause if you get them regrinded they will make noise some time soon again. Most shops do that. But I just pay little more cash to do the job right. Some times you can get away with regrinding, Depends on how old the spider gears are, It not worth it to me, I like things running nice. Well I would change the gear oil and add some syenthic oil to see if that helps, Thats cheap way to see.

Good Luck man.

As far as gear selection, I would go with 3.73's. They are a well rounded gear, good for acceleration and descent on the gas milage. Ive not heard one bad thing about the 4.10 gear setup either. I do a lotta drivin so the 3.73 is perfect for me, and if your makin a lot of power, your just gonna eat the rubber all to pieces with the 4.10s. With the power your car is puttin out, the motor shouldnt need the extra leverage of the 4.10s.

with what you'll spend in replacing spider gears you might just take this time to buy a new posi unit and upgrade to 31 spline axles....I may have a set of new spider gears out of a 2002 f-150 which are for 31 spline axles
