Help with flexplates
I've already tried to search old post but can't find what I'm looking for. First C-4 and C-5 is there any difference and if so can it be idenified externaly? Second what years(motor) are 28oz and which are 50oz? Third which tranny dictates 157 or 164 tooth plate? Bottom line is I want a C-4 for my 83HO which is a one piece rear main non roller.

RE: Help with flexplates
C4 is smaller than the C6 which isvisually larger , 28 oz flexplates come from 351 equiped vehicles .The 50 oz flexplates are for 81 and up302 V8...The amount of teeth is dependant on the size of the bell housing.

c-4 and c-5 trans are basically the same .the only way to tell them apart is to drop the pan and look at the filter ,the c-4 has a bigger filter than the c-5 but they can be interchanged.you can get a valvebody and rebuild kit for a c-4 and use it in the c-5,you can also use a c-4 stall converter on a c-5. 28 oz flexplates also came on older 302 blocks up until 81.there are 2 types of bellhousings ford used for the c-4 and c-5s, big 164 teeth and small 157 tooth, both will bolt to a 5.0 but you cant interchange them (ie use 157 with a big bell housing and vise versa)

RE: Help with flexplates
Thaks for help guys. Would it be logical to assume that a 164t would go with a 11in conv. and 157t would go with 10-1/2in cov. Another question I had is when at the bone yard ,some what are supposed to be C-4's seem to have wider bells than others(front to rear not bell pattern), is this a optical illusion or is this a way to idenify years?

RE: Help with flexplates
yes 164 =11 and 157= 10.5 it would be a way to tell the sizes big or small year wize would be the dipstick locatios for trans and castings on bell housings . older c-4 transare pan filled newer c-4 and c-5s trans are case filled. the bell housings im not 100% sure but older bell housings have ribs from top of bell housing to bottom were bell housing and tran meet newer ones dont have any ribs or have ribs that run halfway down the back of bell housing.

RE: Help with flexplates
The wider bells are C-5s another way to tell a C-4 from a C-5 is look at the studs to adj. the bands the C-4 have the same treads and the C-5 has one fine and one coarse tread. Also I would not use a C-4 converter with C-5 bell.
