73 mustang engine swap
Hello all,
I figured this would be a great place to go for advice on mustangs and all so here i am
anyways i just got a old 73 mustang coupe and its in pretty good shape, so instead of keeping the old beat up 302 engine that was in it i went out and bought a restored 428 cobra jet engine! All my friends have fast cars that theyfixed up like a 1999 mustang, 1993 camaro, and a 2000 trans am, so i felt left out.I probably went too big but I didnt think about it when i bought it. After some measure its goign to be a tight fit I think.
anways just curious if anyone has done this before and could tell me what i should expect. Im sure i am going to need to fabricate some kind of engine mounts because i dont think the 302 ones line up right. Can i use alot of the stuff off of the 302 like power steering pump, water pump, etc?
anwyas thanks

The FE will fit with a lot more room to spare than you think. The '71-'73 engine bay was designed for the 385 series big-block, which is a bit larger than the 428 you have. By going with the FE, you'll have to make your own engine mounts, as there was not an FE option in those years.
Which trans are you going to use? Also, how is the engine built? If it's stock, you may have trouble taking on those newer cars. You will definitely need a new rear, as the 8" isn't really up to the task of handling a big block. Also, put subframes on that car. I raced my '71 for a while, and the chassis twisted enough to pop the upper right corner of the windshield away from the frame.

Youre probably going to tell me I paid way to much, but everyone at the time told me it was a good deal so I took it.
Here is the transmission I am looking at for it.http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...46476_-1_10559.. not sure if that worked but its a tci streetfighter automatic transmission from jegs.
Does the 8 inch rear end look like a 9 inch? just curious because my friends siad I had a 9 inch already. but they could be wrong.
Thanks
