Default RE: homemade AFR meter

ok binky.. you wanna go head to head on tech I am all up for it.

so your gauge is hooked up and your sitting there at idle. It's switching back and forth between 100-900 Mv every 2 seconds. So. Based on that tell me what your AF ratio is?

Now you go WOT, the gauge starts to stabilize and reads a constent 780Mv. What is your AF ratio now?

Do you know the answer to these 2 questions? cause I do.

how about more. Tell me what Lambda means??

But lets go on. Tell me what a normal 02 sensor is made from? give up? zirconia

YOu have some of it right but there is more to it. the cone shaped Zicronium dioxide eliment in the 02 is coates with platinum. the outside of this is exposed to the ehsuast. the inside to atmosphere. The eliment acts like an electrolyte and the platinum serves as electrodes. Once the zicronium reaches around 600 degrees it becomes electricly conductive. It will atract the negitivly charged ions of 02. the ions will coolect to the inner layer of platinum. the amount of 02 in the exhaust is what controls how many ionns are atracted. Which in turn will result in the amount of voltage produced. Thats the simple explanation..

Look up the word Dither in the dictionary. and what does it tell you? Thats how the 02 sensor will be acting. Constently switching back and forth from the righ to lean limit. This is normal operation of the 02. The PCM used in FI cars need this. Why? again, tell me what bias voltage is and I can tell you why.

Why are there 1,2,3 and 4 wire 02's?

Simple a 1 wire is a standerd, simple, signal only non heated unit. (i'll tell you why thats bad in a few mins)
2 wire is exactly the same as the one wire except that it has a dedicated ground signal where as the 1 wire depends on getting it's ground from the contact of the exhaust bung
a 3 wire is a heated sensor with 1 signal wire.
a 4 wire is a headtd sensor with a dedicated ground.

Why is this important?? easy. lets take the single wire sensor that you want to run. Easy easy hook up right? well yes. but there is a down side. undependability. This requires the ground from contact to the exhaust to function. no ground or high resistnce ground will result in the 02 not switching or givig incorrect info. Your exhaust system has to be well grounded to the motor and the bung threads and 02 must be in good shape.
It gets better. since the 02 needs about 600-650 degres to become conductive the motor has to produce enough exhaust heat to do so. Why is this bad? Free flowing exhaust from headers, cat back and no converters will reduce exhaust temps. You first need to make sure that the 02 is hooked up close enough to the motor to get a good reading. Even then it might never reach high enough temps to give you ANY reading. Not only that but if you DO get a reading your not going to get one untill sevral mins after a cold start up while the 02 heats. you also run the risk of it cooling down on low RPM cruising speeds and shutting off.
and now it gets worse. Single wire 02's are known to be the LEAST acurate 02 out there. They can be effected even by exhaus temp. They are highly inacurate and when coupled with the heat up trouble.. well. it's not fun.

so are you following me at all here?

you are a little lucky. These form of gauges will help a carbed vehicle a little more then a FI vehicle do to the fact that there is no adapive fuel system. If I were you I would get at least a 2 wire sensor. But really it would not be a bad Idea to wire in a heated sensor to make sure that you don't have any problems while driving and so it becomes reactive faster.

again. You gave us minimal info and jumpd on us when we tired to help. If I wans't bored I would simply have shruged this off and not given you the time of day. If you want to do it, go for it. At least consider some of my guidlines.

Comon guys, there is no need to argue over this.

hey FOX... our o2 sensors have something like 2 or 4 wires comming from them... any idea which one we would tap into??
Should say on the page.
