Check the oil level and condition.

Try and isolate the noise as to where its coming from, remove the serpentine belt to verify is not an accessory causing the noise.

2004 V6...most likely an exhaust leak. Passenger side exhaust manifold to pipe connection. Tick goes away once the metal has expanded enough to close the gap. it will get worse over time if it is the problem.

99-04 V6 mustangs are notorious for getting a leak there. Open the hood and on the passenger side, see if the A/C drain hose is sitting right above the exhaust pipe. When cold A/C condensation from the condensor core drains out it lands right on the pipe causing compression of the metal. This constant suddent drop in temp from being hot to suddenly cold cracks the weld points on the exhaust manifold over time causing a an exhaust leak.

Wait for the car to get cold, start it up and put your hand down there, you'll probably feel the puffs of air. You can also get really soapy water and spray it down there while still cool. Just like a leak in the tire you'll see it bubbling.

Anyways, go with some MAC shorties or BBK shorties.

I got the same AC leak issue and am considering putting a redirect hose up to the AC drain port. This seems like it will fix the issue.
