If you live in/near a big city go check out the 'pick-a-part' type wrecking yards. Out here they get $150 for a complete 5.0 with a 60 day warranty.
Also check out the swap meets. I saw one at a swap last weekend that they were asking $100 for. It was an '89 5.0 roller shortblock.
4.6 & 4.8 way to expensive to build IMHO........

Tinman, good point. I need to look in about finding a local pick a part car place and Im sure I'll find a good 5.0 block to start with. But $150 for the whole engine!?!? Thats crazy. So I'll see what I can do and let you guys know. Any ideas on what to look up in the phone book to find a salvage yard like the one you were talking about???

i say get a 302, have it bored out and cleaned for he 300. say the engine cost 200-300 then you have spent 500-600, thats still have half what you are going to pay for a crate motor, not to metion that there are other things you need to buy to do your swap, a rear end, trans, stuff like that. so theres say 500 to spend on those or on performance parts.

Ya, but Im sure they will still have to be rebored and conditoned. If you know of any please let me know.
So what you buy a block for $100 and have the work done for another $300, thats $400 and now you have a motor that is easy to get parts for and is way way cheaper than a 4.6 to build. What kind of emmission laws do you need to worry about? That might play a major factor in this whole thing.
California emissions laws state the motor you install has to have the emissions for the year the engine was ORIGINALLY installed, OR the year of the vehicle it is installed in, which ever is newer. .
