thermostat?
The thermostat opens to allow coolant into the engine. The engine first heats up and then when it reachs some temp. the thermostat will open and allow the coolant to cool the engine. If there was no thermostat then I would think It would always be open. If you start your car and let it sit for a while and then feel the radiator hose it should be hot, telling you the stat opened. Not sure about if you dont have one, but I would def. get one if you dont have one.
Some ppl take them out thinking the engine will run cooler. This is not the case. The thermostat is needed to bring the engine up to operating temp quicker. Some of your emissions gear is keyed to come on at a certain temp. About 192 degrees. Install a 195 thermostat. It's stock temp. If you have mods, like a Diablo tune, you can go with a 185 degree t-stat. I HIGHLY recommend Stant's SuperStat. It's more reliable and heavy duty.
